Hi All,
As I always say, you have to just love the way the media spins research. According to a new study from two University researchers (hopefully not sponsored by Wal-Mart, I'm not too cynical am I) having a Wal-Mart in your area could help you lose weight.
People who live near a regular Wal-Mart are connected with a .5 pound weight loss. Those lucky enough to also have a Super Wal-Mart are associated with another .18 pound weight loss. They think it has something to do with the ability of lower economic people to be able to buy less expensive fruits and vegetables.
I find that amusing because I do shop at my local Super Wal-Marts, but I generally find minimal selection of organic produce, and often a lot of their other produce just isn't as nice as that of some of the major supermarkets (maybe it's the Vegas heat), or certainly the natural foods stores like Whole Foods and some of the local stores in this genre. Although Wal-Mart does have good produce prices--I get my bananas there all the time. Plus, I can see where if you are on a tight budget, Wal-Mart would be a blessing to help you maintain proper nutrition.
My theory? Shopping at a Wal-Mart Super Center especially gets you walking a lot more than it does at a smaller store. In fact, when I lived in Colorado, my local Wal-Mart Super Center was in quick walking distance in cold snowy, weather, and my husband and I would purposely go to get out and do a bit of a walking workout. In Las Vegas, I've been doing it all Summer in the triple digit temperatures.
Sometimes, I also find new healthy food products roaming around, like when I discovered Flatout Bread (see my previous post, Healthy Food Review Flatout Bread Wraps). So I guess that could also contribute to the Wal-Mart Diet effect.
So in summary, I believe it's not so much that there is a Wal-Mart Diet, as we are talking about less than a pound difference after all, but extra walking, and possibly access to some healthy food products that have been included in Wal-Mart's offerings, could be contributors to an overall healthy lifestyle. Just stay out of the giant chips, cookies and ice cream aisles if you don't have the willpower to make the healthier choices there.
