Since I titled my book on healthy eating Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too! it's no surprise that I like cheeseburgers, but my latest variation on giving a cheeseburger a healthy food makeover was inspired by my recent trip back East to Florida to visit family.
How The Cheeseburger Wrap Came To Be
It seems that the second box of Boca Burgers that my accommodating brother-in-law brought for the family barbecue to meet the dietary needs of my husband and I were still lurking in the freezer since late November, just begging to see the light of the kitchen (by the way, if you're not into meatless, read on, we can still make this a healthy option, just use a lean turkey burger).
Plus, I had just done a supermarket run with my mother-in-law and the deli section was giving out a free package of Flatout bread to anyone who purchased a pound of deli meat or cheese (which she had done for the kids). Love fresh Flatout bread!
Inspiration struck and a new creation--Aunt Melanie's Cheeseburger Wrap--was born!
My eight and eleven-year-old nieces were so intrigued watching me make it (my four-year-old niece especially had fun eating the strips of cheese before I could get them into the cheeseburger wrap), plus they loved it when they tried it, that I think it'll be a hit not only with you, my loyal adult readers, but also for the kids in your household, or your life.
Note: I do this as a vegetarian recipe, but a lean turkey burger is also fine if you don't want to go meatless.
The Healthy Recipe: Cheeseburger Wrap
Ingredients:
1 Light Whole Wheat Flatout Bread (or the high-fiber, whole grain wrap of your choice)
2 Standard Size Boca Burgers or 1 Large restaurant-size (or the meatless burger of your choice, or a lean turkey burger)
1 slice Fat Free American Cheese (or the favorite fat free cheese of your choice)
Shredded Romaine Lettuce
Organic Ketchup (to taste)
Light soy sauce or worcestershire sauce
Directions:
Cook Boca Burger as usual (I like to add a little light soy sauce or worcestershire when pan frying with olive oil spray and cook about 4 minutes on low-medium heat per side). Cut up burger into small pieces. Cut up thin strips of the cheese leaving on the back of the wrapper until you're ready to use.
Lay out wrap and make about an inch wide line with pieces of chopped Boca Burger, layer a couple of strips of cheese over the burger, add shredded lettuce and a drizzle of ketchup. Roll up wrap tightly to cover the mixture and keep repeating until you've filled and rolled it all up. Any leftover items can fill in any gaps on the ends. Slice in half and serve.
It's messy, but really good and should bring smiles all around (and the kids won't realize they're eating vegetarian if you use that type of burger). Now that's healthy eating with favorite comfort foods!

Wendys Baconator Are You Kidding Me
Hi All,
I was watching the first NFL football kickoff game to see if my Super Bowl champion New York Giants could pick it up where they left off. I was not disappointed.
What was disappointing was one of the few commercials I happened to catch was for Wendy's new dietary monstrosity The Baconator. First the ad mocks those who are vegetarians presumably by having one character talking about being a "Meatatarian" (and yes there is a whole counter culture apparently who focus on eating meat almost to the exclusion of vegetables). Apparently, this is one of Wendy's hot new target markets.
Then they describe this killer hamburger sandwich as having 6 strips of bacon, two quarter pound
hamburger patties, two slices of American cheese, and mayo. I give Wendy's credit though, on their web page they clearly indicate the nutritional info for the Baconator as being 830 calories, a stunning 51 grams of fat (including 23 grams of saturated fat and 2.5 grams of trans fat) and 195 mg of cholesterol. Can you just feel your arteries slamming shut just by reading the nutritional content of that Wendy's Baconator?
And that's not including the fries and shake they advertise with it.
This is America, and to each their own I suppose. And no one should be expecting to go into Wendy's or any other fast food place to find health food (although some have healthier options than others). Besides, let's face it, Wendy's is in business to make a profit, so if there extensive consumer research before launching this product didn't show that someone would buy it, they wouldn't have made it. What does that say about the American Diet?
But how about this? Even though I would never use as large a portion of food as Wendy's does--I could do a healthy food makeover of even The Baconator.
Simply substitute:
--A whole wheat bun
--2 Boca Burgers or Morningstar Farms Grillers (you could even use the large, restaurant size Boca Burgers)
--6 strips of Morningstar Farms Veggie Bacon Strips (which is overkill but I wanted to match the number of Baconator bacon strips to be fair)
--2 slices of fat free American Cheese
--your favorite reduced fat mayonnaise
--your favorite ketchup
My Baconator healthy food makeover is 590 calories, 24 grams of fat (3 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat) with just 5 grams of cholesterol, and my version adds 12 grams of fiver. That's 240 less calories, and VERY importantly, 27 fewer grams of fat, 20 fewer grams of saturated fat and 2.5 grams less of trans fat!
Thats' waaaaay better than the Wendy's Baconator. Hey Wendy's how about making this vegetarian version? We flexitarians have to eat too. You make it, I'll buy it. Remember you heard the recipe here first!
And now I'd like to invite you to learn the secrets of how it is deliciously possible to achieve healthy eating and weight loss without giving up ANY of your favorite comfort foods, just like I showed you above with the Baconator, by getting free access to two chapters from my book "Have Your Cheeseburger And Keep Your Health Too!"
