Best Place To Watch Las Vegas New Year's Eve Fireworks

Here's a top secret place I personally discovered that is the best place to watch Las Vegas New Year's Eve fireworks on the Las Vegas Strip.  What's so great about this location?

1.  You can take in as wide a panoramic view as possible of the New Year's Eve fireworks.

The fireworks will be shot off simultaneously across the various hotel rooftops along The Las Vegas Strip--MGM Grand, Aria, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, The Venetian and The Stratosphere.  In 2008, a fire at The Bellagio caused the fireworks extravaganza to be lowered to the ground, and it was a really pathetic display.  Fortunately, beginning last year, the Las Vegas New Year's Eve fireworks returned to the rooftops--much better! 

2.  You can check out the fireworks without having to actually be on The Strip. 

While I've actually been on The Las Vegas Strip for the countdown and fireworks (Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard to be exact), the truth is that it gets pretty squishy and at times pretty scary when drunk people start to push and the crowd force takes over.  Not much fun.  I can say "been on The Las Vegas Strip at midnight on New Year's Eve--check, now I'm done with it."

Where To See Las Vegas Fourth Of July Fireworks 2010

Regrettably I won't be in Las Vegas this year for the Fourth of July (I'll be in rainy Tampa visiting family).  That's a shame because it looks like there's some great options for seeing Las Vegas Fourth of July fireworks--even better than my previous Las Vegas fireworks displays round-up.

My top picks are:

1.  Fourth of July Fireworks at Caesar's Palace

Not only can you see what is sure to be a spectacular fireworks show on the 4th at 9 p.m. at the Roman Plaza, but on both Saturday and Sunday, Caesar's Palace has smartly brought us an opportunity to cool down. 

They're transforming the Roman Plaza into what they call a "cool zone" complete with a four-story ski jump (no you can't go on it--just professional skiers and snowboarders who will do demonstrations) and a walk-through ice lounge.  Personally, I'd try to hang out on the ice lounge as long as possible with temps well into the hundreds.

2.  Station Casino's 4th of July Blast

Station Casinos, with Grucci having their back, will simultaneously launch fireworks at Green Valley Ranch, Aliante Station, Fiesta Rancho, Texas Station and Red Rock at 9 p.m. on the 4th.  Too bad we can't be at all 5 locations at once.  I went to Red Rock last year and watched from the parking garage.  They were pretty good and convenient without the tourist crowds.

And I even forgive them for opening up Aliante Station instead of Durango Station like they were supposed to do many moons ago (and even up to 2008 were still swearing it was about to open).

3.  Fremont Street

It looks like Fremont Street isn't satisfied with just celebrating July 4th, they have stuff going on from the 2nd to the 5th.  On Friday, July 2nd, The Golden Nugget will start the Independence Day weekend early with launching its fireworks at 10:10 p.m. on July 2nd--isn't that premature celebration?

The next night you can go "Reminiscing" with The Little River Band who performs on the 3rd Street Stage on July 3rd at 9 p.m.

And there are always virtual fireworks available overhead on the Fremont Street Experience Viva Vision in-between its regular showings.

The main thing with Fremont Street is when it gets crowded it can get much hotter than the 100 or so degrees of actual temperature, and at times you may feel like you simply can't move or get any air--that happened to me when it was only May a couple of years ago when I went to see Sugarland at Fremont Street.  So drink plenty of fluids--and I don't mean that mega alcohol drink you might be carrying around if you're visiting--that will dehydrate you fast!

Las Vegas Places To Eat Hash House A Go Go

On this day, my husband and I chose to follow yet again in Adam Richman's (of Man Vs. Food fame) footsteps and try out Hash House A Go Go in Las Vegas. 

While we generally are healthy eaters and work out regularly, we do like our wacky indulgences as well, so when we saw the crazy-size portions of "twisted farm food" Hash House A Go Go Las Vegas dishes out, we decide to make a dunch (combo lunch and dinner) out of it.

The restaurant's atmosphere is loud and noisy and a bit funky, but you don't go to Hash House A Go Go for that, you go for a Snickers flapjack (as featured in the photo) and a huge farm scramble.  As our server explained, the Snickers pancake or Snickers flapjack, is a traditional flapjack with a Snickers candy bar crumbled on top and baked in.  It's beyond huge, taking up residence on a giant oval plate.  If Hash House A Go Go was serving pizza, it would be this big!

This is not for those of you on a low-carb diet!  And you will be taking at least half of this Snickers pancake home (so breakfast the next day is handled) despite the fact it tastes so good you don't really want to put your fork down.

As an egg lover (usually egg whites, of Eggbeaters, but I do usually indulge in real eggs out), my eye went to the farm scrambles (you can see a peek of it in the top of the photo as well).  I was a little disappointed that my server said I couldn't substitute spinach for the mushrooms in what was otherwise a very appealing ground turkey, broccoli combo because "the cooks get funny about changing around their recipes."  I was even willing to pay for the substitution--no dice, this is not Burger King where you get it your way, but the food is in a totally different class, so you have to deal with it.

So I ended up with the scrambled egg, broccoli and ground turkey (which I never had before in eggs), and a side of grilled mashed potatoes.  Really yummy--in fact, I'm now trying to figure out how to recreate this dish so I can make it at home more often with some slightly healthier substitutions, because I'm hooked.

A worthwhile outing?  Definitely! And you can choose from the Hash House A Go Go Sahara and Rainbow location we went to, or the Imperial Palace if you're visiting and staying on The Las Vegas Strip.

M Resort Las Vegas Nation's Tallest Christmas Tree

The M Resort, in an effort to get people over to its VERY off-strip location at Las Vegas Blvd. and St. Rose Parkway, this holiday season has as its attraction The Nation's Tallest Christmas Tree.

As a former native New Yorker, who spent many a holiday season checking out the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, I figured I needed to see how M Resort's stacked up.

The Nation's Tallest Christmas Tree is out by the pool area (you can also see it from the road).  It's tall all right, so I will believe them about their claim to fame, but it doesn't have the width of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, and it just isn't as nicely decorated. 

The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is not only tall but has nice width and the zillions of LED lights simply dazzle you.  The M Resort's Christmas tree has long, vertical strings of yellow lights that are the size of bathroom vanity light bulbs and red, yellow and green ornament balls that really don't show up at night against the blazing yellow light strings.  It basically looks like a giant lit-up corn cob, rather than a Christmas tree as my picture shows.  Nice try M Resort, but your decorating needs work.

The nicer decoration in my opinion was the fact that the giant "M" on the casino building was changed to candy cane colors and was very attractive and festive.

This is what a great Christmas Tree should look like--The Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.  

So Merry Corn Cob Las Vegas, and to all a good night.

Las Vegas Places To Eat Pinks Hot Dogs In Vegas

I had heard the rumors, but last Friday night I found out Pink's Hot Dogs really has opened up an eatery in Vegas right on The Las Vegas Strip outside Planet Hollywood Casino (about a month ago--talk about a quiet opening).  We were teased before when one of the restaurants inside Planet Hollywood started serving select varieties of Pink's hot dogs, but not what I like to eat from Pink's--the world's best turkey dog in my opinion!

As Guy Fieri likes to say on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this is "the real deal" Pink's in Las Vegas. They have my turkey dog! And since they're open till 3 AM on Friday and Saturday nights and till around midnight during the week, that's one accessible Pink's turkey dog.

Now don't be fooled, there are some major differences between Pink's Las Vegas and the original Pink's Hollywood:

1.  Pink's Las Vegas is in a better neighborhood, and about 275 miles closer.

2.  Here you don't have to buy a snack from the gas station convenience store across the street while waiting to buy your meal because you're starving and the wait is legendary at the Pink's in Hollywood

3.  Pink's Las Vegas takes credit cards, Pink's Hollywood takes cash only

4.  You can eat at their outdoor patio literally right on the Las Vegas Strip and stare at the massive City Center and catch a glimpse of the Fountains Of Bellagio water show

5.  In true Las Vegas fashion, you can get a Margarita or Daiquiri

My big concern was would the turkey dog taste as good as it does from Pink's Hollywood?  And it definitely does!  Yet somehow I couldn't help thinking that it's just a little too easy to eat at Pink's Las Vegas.  There's a major sense of accomplishment that's missing when you can literally walk up and buy what you want instead of waiting an hour and a half or so and bonding with everyone on line who's in the same boat.

The upside is that with the extra time my husband and I saved by not having to wait in line like we do at Pink's Hollywood, we were able to take a nice long walk on the Las Vegas Strip, burn off the turkey dog, catch part of the Rockies-Dodgers final series of the baseball season at The Mirage sportsbook, catch two shows of The Fountains of Bellagio and watch the new volcano eruption show at The Mirage.  I miss living in California, but that'll work!

Las Vegas Holiday Pictures The Bellagio Conservatory And Botanical Gardens Holiday Show

The Bellagio has always been my favorite Las Vegas hotel resort and casino simply because of the grandeur, class and The Fountains Of Bellagio (the dancing water synchronized to all kinds of music).  During the holidays, there's the added enjoyment of a great holiday show in The Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.  Even the hallways are beautiful like this "candy in the air"

It was once again a magical holiday display from a whimsical snow family with "snow" falling (not that we needed any with last week's rare, surprise storm (see prior post Las Vegas Snow Pictures The Las Vegas Snowstorm of 2008) and beauty of the tree and mirrored gift "packages", along with fresh peppermint plants to add natural holiday aroma to the air. 

And The Fountains Of Bellagio are doing their dances to a variety of holiday music as well (you can see them do their thing 12 to 8 p.m. on the half hour and every 15 minutes after that till midnight for the holidays--both are free, family-friendly Vegas holiday must-sees!

Circus Circus Las Vegas Family Friendly Vegas To The Max

Hi All,

I always find it interesting how many Las Vegas tourists bring their kids to Sin City Las Vegas.  The temporary emphasis on being family friendly Las Vegas throughout The Las Vegas Strip is so passe now.

That's not to say there isn't still plenty of family friendly Vegas here, you just have to look harder past the Billboards that are seemingly everywhere showing as much of the female form as is legally possible advertising the latest one-word-named, Las Vegas nightclub.

Circus Circus has always been the epitome of family friendly Las Vegas, and it remains so today.  How can a Las Vegas hotel casino that sports a giant, if a bit weather-worn, clown front and center not be Las Vegas family friendly.

Circus Circus is famous for its free circus acts that perform overhead daily from 11 a.m. to midnight on their Carnival Midway.  The Midway is chock full of classic carnival games, plus the latest and greatest (200 in total according to the Circus Circus web site).  So if your kids have a burning desire to win a Sponge Bob stuffed figure or other commercial kid characters, this is the place for them.

Action-oriented kids of all ages will love The Adventuredome Theme Park with its thrill rides and more free Las Vegas shows--these are free clown shows.  Best of all, Adventuredome a great place to brave the Las Vegas Summer heat as Adventuredome is mercifully housed inside in air conditioning under a giant purple dome you can see for miles away.  I will warn you that it gets super crowded and loud because all the ride and people noise is also housed under that purple Adventuredome dome.

The Adventuredome Theme Park at Circus Circus is open 10 a.m. to midnight every day all Summer and a one day pass is a reasonable $24.95.  You can also buy a single ticket ride and anyone can walk around and take in the spectacle that is Adventuredome for free. www.Adventuredome.com.

TIP:  You can save $5 on an all day pass if you visit a Las Vegas Burger King, and get $2 off if you are a Nevada resident.

Las Vegas Places To Eat Best Frozen Yogurt, Smoothies And Other Cool Treats

Hi All,

Triple digits every day in Las Vegas call for lighter food and snack choices.  What could be better than keeping it cool and healthy with the best frozen yogurt, smoothies and other cool treats in Las Vegas?

Whether you're a Las Vegas local, or a Las Vegas Visitor, here are my favorite Las Vegas places to eat to cool down without causing damage to your waistline:

1.  Best Las Vegas Frozen Yogurt:  Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt and Yogel's Frozen Yogurt. 

Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt

Is an import from my California Days--thank goodness!  I was so happy to see that they had Las Vegas Golden Spoon locations when I moved back here.  I basically lived on Golden Spoon frozen yogurt in Orange County, CA. 

No one can match Golden Spoon with their wide selection of non-fat frozen yogurt with amazing flavors like Peanut Butter Cup, Pistachio (which they never have often enough since it's my personal favorite), Mounds Bar, Cookies And Cream, Heath Bar (virtually fat free), Mint and much more.  And no one's frozen yogurt tastes quite as delicious. 

Each Golden Spoon typically has 12 non-fat frozen yogurt flavors on hand, along with many toppings to pick from--although the frozen yogurt is so good on its own, you really don't require a topping.  With Golden Spoon who needs ice cream?  Thre are several Las Vegas Golden Spoon frozen yogurt locations, find yours at www.goldenspoon.com

Yogel's Frozen Yogurt

I have also grown fond of an independent frozen yogurt store that just opened a few months ago in Southwest Las Vegas called Yogel's.  They are very generous with buy one, get one free coupons.

Yogel's has 8 flavors of non-fat frozen yogurt typically--and some are the more unusual kind that attracts my taste buds like White Macadamia Nut, Mint, Cake Batter, Peanut Butter.  Yogel's lets you serve yourself samples and servings of both frozen yogurt and toppings, and then weighs your frozen yogurt creation, and you pay by the ounce.  I really like the fact they show the nutrition information for the toppings as you scoop them up so you know exactly what you are getting into.

Yogel's has a cute ambience, kids have a ball with self-serve and they even have their own catchy Yogel's jingle which breaks into the regular background music played every now and then.  Just one location in Southwest Las Vegas on Flamingo and Grand Canyon. www.yogels.com

2.  Best Las Vegas Smoothie:  Jamba Juice, Juice It Up and Tropical Smoothie Cafe

Jamba Juice

Jamba Juice has always been my favorite from California and Colorado (yes, it actually got warm enough to have a smoothie in Colorado at times).  My smoothie of choice?  Orange Dream Machine with soy protein and fiber boost!  Unfortunately, while Jamba Juice has several Las Vegas locations, they don't have any that are near me, so I don't get to have it as much as I would like.  Why are you guys MIA in Southwest Las Vegas? www.JambaJuice.com

Juice It Up

Juice It Up is another Southern California favorite, but regrettably only two Las Vegas locations, and yes, they are also MIA in Southwest Las Vegas. My personal faves are Banarama, Pina Coolada and Orange Blitz.  www.juiceitup.com

Tropical Smoothie Cafe

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is all over the place in Las Vegas, and is the closest to where I live, so by default, they are my main smoothie place.  They have a wide variety of smoothies including some made with more exotic fruits like Goji, Acai and Pomegranate.  Hawaiian Breeze and Tropi-Colada are my favorites. 

My big beef with Tropical Smoothie Cafe is that unlike Jamba Juice or Juice It Up, a boost is not included in the price.  I really like adding protein to smoothies to make them more filling and nutritious, but don't like paying for the add-on when others offer it as part of the smoothie.  Most Tropical Smootie Cafe locations will have some kind of buy one, get one free Happy Hour (typically an hour or more between 4 and 7 p.m.), but often don't publicize it so you have to be in the know.  Another plus is some locations are even 24 hours--only in Vegas can you get a smoothie 24/7!  www.TropicalSmootiheCafe.com

3.  Best Las Vegas Ices:  Frozen Aces

Frozen Aces is a new independent that has opened in our Southwest Las Vegas area offering fruit ices and gelati.  This deliciously sweet non-fat, low-calorie fruit ice treat from Frozen Aces is made with real fruit, and has the consistency of the wet slushy snow I used to deal with in Colorado at times.  Frozen Aces offers several flavors of fruit ice at reasonable prices that can't help but cool you down--watermelon, coconut and pina colada are my faves.  Located on Ft. Apache before Tropicana across the street from WalMart www.frozenaces.com.

Beat The Las Vegas Heat Escape To Mount Charleston

Hi All,

If you're a Las Vegas local, you're noticing the mercury is now in the triple digits every day.  If you're a Las Vegas visitor, maybe you haven't been out of the pool or casino long enough to care.  The Las Vegas Summer is NOT my favorite time of year at all.  So I spend a lot of time trying hard to beat the Las Vegas heat. 

I went radio dark for a few days on this Vegas Inside Scoop Blog enjoying the brisk San Francisco temperatures, San Francisco Bay and The Pacific Ocean on a quick getaway going home to California.  I was actually wearing two sweatshirts walking over the Golden Gate Bridge!

Unfortunately, it's back to reality, after all we do live in the desert.

If you can't get to someplace cool like San Francisco, you can beat the Las Vegas heat very nearby.  The "beat the Las Vegas heat" secret?  It's 30 minutes away from The Las Vegas Strip at Mount Charleston!  This oasis in the desert actually still had snow at its peak two weeks ago, and heavenly temperatures that were 30 degrees lower than Vegas.  That's right, if it's 100 degrees in Las Vegas, it's 70 degrees up on Mount Charleston!

I hiked one of the two hour trails that included forest, a waterfall with snow at its base, a fantastic view of the entire Valley from 8500 feet up, pine cones, forest, tiny chipmunks and more.  It was like being back in the Colorado Rockies again and that break from the Las Vegas Heat made all the difference and helped me return to sanity...temporarily :)

Best of all Mount Charleston is a Las Vegas freebie, and it's a wonderful diversion for any Las Vegas visitor--especially if you've been here before and are looking for something new to do on a Summer Las Vegas trip.

To get to Mount Charleston, take the 95 North to State Road 157 and turn left (you'll see a sign for Mount Charleston) and head West on 157 uphill for 18 miles.  You'll leave the desert floor and the Las Vegas heat behind as you climb!
