Best Place To Watch Las Vegas New Year's Eve Fireworks

Here's a top secret place I personally discovered that is the best place to watch Las Vegas New Year's Eve fireworks on the Las Vegas Strip.  What's so great about this location?

1.  You can take in as wide a panoramic view as possible of the New Year's Eve fireworks.

The fireworks will be shot off simultaneously across the various hotel rooftops along The Las Vegas Strip--MGM Grand, Aria, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, The Venetian and The Stratosphere.  In 2008, a fire at The Bellagio caused the fireworks extravaganza to be lowered to the ground, and it was a really pathetic display.  Fortunately, beginning last year, the Las Vegas New Year's Eve fireworks returned to the rooftops--much better! 

2.  You can check out the fireworks without having to actually be on The Strip. 

While I've actually been on The Las Vegas Strip for the countdown and fireworks (Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard to be exact), the truth is that it gets pretty squishy and at times pretty scary when drunk people start to push and the crowd force takes over.  Not much fun.  I can say "been on The Las Vegas Strip at midnight on New Year's Eve--check, now I'm done with it."

Best Of The Holiday Season In Las Vegas

We've had our fair share of Decembers to remember (like that car commercial says--who really gets a car for Christmas?) here at Vegas Inside Scoop.  So for all of you who haven't been with us the past two years, here's a round-up of the best of the holiday season in Las Vegas for your holiday enjoyment.

Las Vegas Places To Eat Hash House A Go Go

On this day, my husband and I chose to follow yet again in Adam Richman's (of Man Vs. Food fame) footsteps and try out Hash House A Go Go in Las Vegas. 

While we generally are healthy eaters and work out regularly, we do like our wacky indulgences as well, so when we saw the crazy-size portions of "twisted farm food" Hash House A Go Go Las Vegas dishes out, we decide to make a dunch (combo lunch and dinner) out of it.

The restaurant's atmosphere is loud and noisy and a bit funky, but you don't go to Hash House A Go Go for that, you go for a Snickers flapjack (as featured in the photo) and a huge farm scramble.  As our server explained, the Snickers pancake or Snickers flapjack, is a traditional flapjack with a Snickers candy bar crumbled on top and baked in.  It's beyond huge, taking up residence on a giant oval plate.  If Hash House A Go Go was serving pizza, it would be this big!

This is not for those of you on a low-carb diet!  And you will be taking at least half of this Snickers pancake home (so breakfast the next day is handled) despite the fact it tastes so good you don't really want to put your fork down.

As an egg lover (usually egg whites, of Eggbeaters, but I do usually indulge in real eggs out), my eye went to the farm scrambles (you can see a peek of it in the top of the photo as well).  I was a little disappointed that my server said I couldn't substitute spinach for the mushrooms in what was otherwise a very appealing ground turkey, broccoli combo because "the cooks get funny about changing around their recipes."  I was even willing to pay for the substitution--no dice, this is not Burger King where you get it your way, but the food is in a totally different class, so you have to deal with it.

So I ended up with the scrambled egg, broccoli and ground turkey (which I never had before in eggs), and a side of grilled mashed potatoes.  Really yummy--in fact, I'm now trying to figure out how to recreate this dish so I can make it at home more often with some slightly healthier substitutions, because I'm hooked.

A worthwhile outing?  Definitely! And you can choose from the Hash House A Go Go Sahara and Rainbow location we went to, or the Imperial Palace if you're visiting and staying on The Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas Places To Eat Pinks Hot Dogs In Vegas

I had heard the rumors, but last Friday night I found out Pink's Hot Dogs really has opened up an eatery in Vegas right on The Las Vegas Strip outside Planet Hollywood Casino (about a month ago--talk about a quiet opening).  We were teased before when one of the restaurants inside Planet Hollywood started serving select varieties of Pink's hot dogs, but not what I like to eat from Pink's--the world's best turkey dog in my opinion!

As Guy Fieri likes to say on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives this is "the real deal" Pink's in Las Vegas. They have my turkey dog! And since they're open till 3 AM on Friday and Saturday nights and till around midnight during the week, that's one accessible Pink's turkey dog.

Now don't be fooled, there are some major differences between Pink's Las Vegas and the original Pink's Hollywood:

1.  Pink's Las Vegas is in a better neighborhood, and about 275 miles closer.

2.  Here you don't have to buy a snack from the gas station convenience store across the street while waiting to buy your meal because you're starving and the wait is legendary at the Pink's in Hollywood

3.  Pink's Las Vegas takes credit cards, Pink's Hollywood takes cash only

4.  You can eat at their outdoor patio literally right on the Las Vegas Strip and stare at the massive City Center and catch a glimpse of the Fountains Of Bellagio water show

5.  In true Las Vegas fashion, you can get a Margarita or Daiquiri

My big concern was would the turkey dog taste as good as it does from Pink's Hollywood?  And it definitely does!  Yet somehow I couldn't help thinking that it's just a little too easy to eat at Pink's Las Vegas.  There's a major sense of accomplishment that's missing when you can literally walk up and buy what you want instead of waiting an hour and a half or so and bonding with everyone on line who's in the same boat.

The upside is that with the extra time my husband and I saved by not having to wait in line like we do at Pink's Hollywood, we were able to take a nice long walk on the Las Vegas Strip, burn off the turkey dog, catch part of the Rockies-Dodgers final series of the baseball season at The Mirage sportsbook, catch two shows of The Fountains of Bellagio and watch the new volcano eruption show at The Mirage.  I miss living in California, but that'll work!

The Inside Scoop: Las Vegas’ Hottest Nightclubs

Everyone knows the expression “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas,” which implies that all sorts of crazy ongoings have the potential to happen in Sin City. But where does all this wild fun happen? Certainly, it can’t be restricted to one part of the city, but a great place to start nonetheless is in a Las Vegas nightclub. No matter who you are from 9 to 5, you can shed your inhibitions and truly let loose at these party hubs, where even Hollywood’s elite come to get their dance and drink on.

Men, women, wallflowers, dance nuts, gamblers, and yes, even the “cocktail enthusiast” – Las Vegas nightclubs welcome you all, some more so than other.  Vegas has no shortage of clubs for every class of partier, so regardless of what your style is, you’re sure to find good times at night.

For the luxury seeker, Bank Nightclub at the Bellagio will suit you best with its swanky décor and VIP atmosphere that seems especially designed for the high-roller. You’ll feel the glamorous vibe literally upon your entrance –the club’s foyer is lined with clear glass walls, through which hundreds of bottles of Dom Perignon and Cristal can be seen. And of course, you can enjoy some of that wealth with European bottle service while you people-watch (or dance) from one of the club’s multiple tiers.

Another fun place to people watch is TAO Nightclub at the Venetian, where you can feast your eyes on not only the beautiful club-goers but also the beautiful models, which dance around in flower bikinis and lounge about in pools and bathtubs. Modeled after a Mediterranean bathhouse, TAO has one of the coolest atmospheres in Vegas. Celebrities especially love starting their night with dinner in the downstairs Asian bistro and ending it with drinks and dancing in the upstairs club.

 

If you’re looking for a mellower place to hang at night, check out ghostbar at the Palms. A great spot to meet people, ghostbar features a breathtaking outdoor terrace looking down on the Strip – and the fact that it’s surrounded by glass is a mind trip, even if you haven’t been drinking. On the other side of the spectrum, Rain Nightclub offers a high-energy nightclub, perfect for ladies who love to dance, with the best DJs (DJ AM and DJ Paul Oakenfold) and the best fire and water effects in the city.

 

Meanwhile, those with edgier tastes in nightlife will enjoy Wasted Space at the Hard Rock, an intimate club playing the hottest rock hits. If you hate traditional super-clubs, you’ll love Wasted Space, which features live performances, dark-toned tattoo-inspired décor, and a casual dress code.  The fact that it’s owned by Carey Hart, baseball’s Jason Giambi, and rockers Benji and Joel Madden doesn’t hurt, either. 

 

With so many clubs to choose from, a great night in Las Vegas is never far away. The only hard part is trying to remember what happened the morning after – but that secret is between you and the city. Las Vegas Places To Eat Carmines Pizza Kitchen

Despite having a lot of people from New York City in Las Vegas (and yes I am originally from there myself)--sometimes it seems like it's the 7th borough (the joke is always that Florida is the 6th for those of you who don't know), pizza can be a hit or miss proposition in Las Vegas.

So when I saw the banner go up announcing that Carmine's Pizza Kitchen, from the original founder of Villa Pizza, was opening on Rainbow Blvd and Tropicana, it caught my eye.  And when they added a grand opening special on April 2nd of a $3.99 large cheese pizza--trying it had to be a no-brainer!  By the way, that was a one-day proposition, don't expect that price when you visit.  You had to be there day one.

Ironically, I stopped at Carmine's Pizza Kitchen to get a pizza that day for dunch for myself and my husband on the way back from kickboxing at the gym--at least I worked out first, and yes we froze half.  The parking lot was full and the place was packed.  Plus they had those red and white checked tablecloths on the tables that is usually the sign of a good down-home italian place.  All good signs.

The decor was nicely contemporary inside, with LCD TVs at 6 of the tables, and "grapevines" overhead for atmosphere.  I also liked the fact that at Carmine's Pizza Kitchen you can see them working on the pizzas right behind the counter.  The guy who took my order was friendly despite the crazy crowd--okay, that wasn't authentic NYC--no attitude, but I can live with that.

I had time to look at the menu while they made my pizza up fresh with extra sauce, and was pleased to see that for my next visit they offer spinach and broccoli as toppings.  Yes I know that's not authentic NYC either, but since I came out West (California and Colorado first), I learned to eat much healthier and I seek out vegetables to add to my pizza.

But ultimately, how was the pizza?  Awesome! Authentic NYC flavor with the right sauce taste and cheese taste and texture that's hard to find in Las Vegas pizza.  And it was not dripping oil as is the case with so many Las Vegas pizza places!  I would definitely go back and pay full price for Carmine's Pizza Kitchen pizza--but they probably knew that all along!

Carmine's also makes Sicilian pizza, and a variety of traditional italian pasta dinners, subs, calzones and salads that will have to be investigated in the future too!

Holiday Light Displays In Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Strip has lots of lights all year long, but around the holiday season, lots of places around Las Vegas put on their holiday best and it's a great way to experience a family-friendly Las Vegas.  Here's part one of my list of the major holiday light displays in Las Vegas this holiday season.

1.  The Gift of Lights at Sunset Park is a drive-thru holiday light display that's a great holiday night time activity.  You can also see it from the air if your flight into or out of town comes in over Sunset Park.  Cost is $13 per car, Sunset Park enter off Eastern. Now through January 4th.

2.  The Springs Preserve Winter Festival also decks out its attraction with a holiday light display among its many acres.  It's an unexpected oasis in the middle of Las Vegas.

Cost is $8 for adults, $6 for kids 5-17 and kids 4 and under are free. Carriage rides and train rides are an extra $5 and $2, respectively. The festival is Friday nights through Sunday nights from now until December 21st, then daily December 22nd through December 30th (closed Christmas Day).

3.  Ethel M Chocolate Wonderland in Henderson does a great holiday light display in its beautiful cactus gardens with over 500,000 lights nightly from now through January 1st.  Best of all, it's a free activity--as long as you can resist the chocolate shop which is conveniently open during the holiday tours (closed Christmas Day)

Aliante Station Debut in North Las Vegas

Aliante Station in North Las Vegas, the newest casino and hotel from Station Casinos officially opened today.  

Frankly, I'm jealous because we were supposed to get Durango Station in Southwest Las Vegas about 3 years ago now, and we keep getting disappointed as the reality of that property ever debuting is on hold while Station Casinos struggles to get financing for Durango Station in this tight credit market, instead of reaching into its own well-stuffed pockets.

I guess Aliante Station went first because Station Casinos was able to split the cost and risk with 50% partner backing, and they wanted to tap into the local retiree gambling market in Sun City and upper-end Aliante residents who are way out there by themselves.  People in those areas refer to theselves as living in "Aliante", but they can call it what they want, they still live in North Las Vegas.

Anyway, Aliante Station will mimic a smaller, less grandiose Red Rock Casino, and feature the usual well-done Station Casino amenities including a 700-seat showroom, 16-theater movie complex, sportsbook with 65 inch LCD screens and 6 restaurants including The Original Pancake House and TGI Friday's, and a brand-name food court that includes Dunkin' Donuts, Johnny Rockets, Villa Pizza, Rubios, Capriotti's and more.

If you want to go on a local's road trip.  Hike on up to Aliante Station.  I'm going to take a one-time trek spin myself with my convertible to satisfy my curiosity and get a further glimpse hopefully into Durango Station's future.

Las Vegas Obama McCain And Election Day Margaritas Mix

Hi All,

I came across one of the more amusing Election Day marketing campaigns when dining this weekend at my favorite local Las Vegas healthy Mexican restaurant, Super Mex Cantina (See my prior Super Mex restaurant review Las Vegas Places To Eat Super Mex Mexican Restaurant). 

Right now, and including a big Election Day Party (with various food and drink specials) at each of its Las Vegas locations, Super Mex is offering $4 Margaritas that allow you to cast your vote and support your favorite Presidential candidate, either McCain with a red margarita, Obama with a blue margarita, or my personal favorite "Undecided" (yes I intend to be a swing vote).

I am going to assume that you are of drinking age in reading this post, if you are not, please have a responsible adult in your household read it instead.

Seems like a lot more fun than waiting on Election Day polling place lines to vote Obama, McCain or "None Of The Above".

Things To Do In Las Vegas Football Central At The Las Vegas Hilton

Hi All,

If you love watching Sunday NFL football or Monday night football at the Las Vegas sportsbook in Las Vegas hotel casinos as a Las Vegas local or Las Vegas visitor, here's a treat for you!  I checked out Football Central at the Las Vegas Hilton this past Sunday instead of my usual local Station sportsbook and what a great time!

You can watch all the games on giant screens in the Las Vegas Hilton showroom theater with no cover charge--the same one Barry Manilow plays in which may or may not be a plus for you--from the comfort of theater seating with drink holders and free prizes raffled off every few minutes.  Particularly amusing was the autographed OJ Simpson mini helmet given his current circumstances in Las Vegas jail--I guess they could have just run over and asked for the autograph.

There's over a thousand seats at the Las Vegas Hilton Football Central, so no worries about getting up at the crack of dawn to get your seat.  The helpful attendants even give out a guide, along with your raffle ticket as you enter, so you know where each game will be showing within the theater.  This way you can line yourself up with your favorite team, or the team you have your money on--which is your temporary favorite team.  A nice touch.

Also convenient is the satellite sportsbook right outside the theater door for placing your afternoon bets should you wish to donate more funds to the Las Vegas Hilton.

There's an MC who not only announces food and drink specials, and calls out raffle ticket prizes and winning tickets, but asks provocative questions like "is Frank TV any good since they advertise it so much?"  The answer was obvious from the four people or so who clapped their vote.  Nothing personal Frank, but TBS does overdo it on the ads.

Guys will like the beer and drink company girls who give out free t-shirts, beads, etc to those who buy their company's products during the game.  We also had "stars" from a local gentlemen's club handing out club invites--one of those only in Vegas things.  Don't worry female football fans, it won't get in the way of your enjoying the games and it's actually amusing to see how crazy guys will get for a t-shirt.

You don't get a personal small TV in front of you to select a particular game or non-football event to have at your personal disposal like you do at a Station hotel sportsbook, but it's really not necessary with the great viewing of all games from really most seats.  And you can't watch a Sunday night game, because you have to clear the theater for Barry Manilow or whatever show is on then.  A small price to pay.
